Spring 2017 Course Details: Globalization and Education EDPS 565

Professor: Pauline Lipman | Class Schedule: Thursday (5:00 PM to 8:00 PM)

Registration to this course requires consent of the professor. This class examines education policies and practices in relation to neoliberal globalization and its contestations. Some questions we will grapple with are:

  • How are education policies and ideologies shaped by, and implicated in the political-economic, racial, and cultural dimensions of globalization?
  • In what ways are current globalized education policies that emanate from the U.S. and Western Europe rooted in, and reproductive of, histories of colonialism, imperialism, and white supremacy and their relations of power?
  • What is the role of powerful non-governmental global organizations (e.g, IMF, World Bank, World Trade Organization) in shaping global education agendas and their national/local iterations?
  • How do these transnational organizations, neoliberal discourses, and transnational knowledge industries promote education markets and privatization, destruction of indigenous knowledge systems, cultural homogenization, global English, epistemicide, and integration of local and national education systems into global markets?
  • How are teachers, students, parents, teacher unions, social movements, and states resisting in local contexts and how are they connecting globally?
  • What are alternative educational visions, epistemologies, and practices emanating in specific places but with global reach? (We will examine several examples.)
  • In what ways is education part of global resistance to capitalism, imperialism, genocide, climate catastrophe, and militarism?

Readings and films will draw on critical globalization studies, post-colonial studies, Southern theory, Critical Development Studies, political economy, critical geography, and indigenous perspectives. We will also dialogue with education researchers and activists internationally.

Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellowship

Summer 2017 - May 2018

Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellowships are designed to provide teaching and other professional experiences, mentoring, and potential employment opportunities within universities that are strongly committed to cultural diversity.  Applicants from diverse cultural backgrounds, especially those from historically underrepresented groups, are encouraged to apply. 

As a Frederick Douglass Scholars Fellow, scholars will teach and/or co-teach during the summer session(s) or full academic year (depending on term of appointment), continue their research, and contribute to the life of the university.  Fellows will receive mentorship and professional support from experienced faculty, helping them to prepare for academic careers and job searches.  Dates of employment vary among universities, but typically run during May –August 2017 for summer appointments, or August 2017-May 2018 for full year appointments.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Applicant must be U.S. citizen or permanent resident
  • MA degree completed and enrollment in a terminal degree program (Ph.D., MFA, Ed. D, etc.)
  • Academic background in one of the disciplines taught at the university. 

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Previous Teaching experience
  • Currently ABD or doctorate within last two years.  

Priority consideration given to completed applications postmarked by February 6, 2017.

Volunteer Opportunity - Working with Refugees
Refugee and Immigrant Community Services (a part of Heartland Alliance) is a nonprofit that provides ESL instruction (among other services) to adults, for free. Our students are mostly from Latin American and Eastern Europe. We serve about 700 immigrants per year.
 
Volunteers typically:
  1. Tutoring students one-on-one, for 1-2 hours at a time, once per week.
  2. Teaching ESL classes, with lesson plans and materials prepared by a staff teacher. These classes are offered 9:00-11:00am, Monday through Friday and 6:00-9:00 pm, Monday through Wednesday. We have five levels of ESL which are taught by volunteers/interns.
  3. Teaching supplemental English classes. These usually occur at 11:00am, Monday through Friday, after the morning students' regular ESL classes. These classes are really interesting, because they give volunteers/interns a chance to be creative and think of fun ways to help our students learn English.

UIC Children's Center provides early childhood and care to preschool age children of UIC Students, Faculty, and Staff. Our on-campus site offers students the opportunity to work in a NAEYC accredited classroom, alongside experienced early childhood education professionals.

Nature Education Teacher position at the Garfield Park Conservatory

The Nature Education Teacher is a part-time position. Primary responsibilities are to 1) facilitate lesson-based family educational activities; 2) facilitate unstructured nature-based play with young children; and 3) assist with program preparation and material organization. Shifts on Saturdays & Sundays 11:30am-4:30pm, Mondays 9:30am-12:30pm, and Wednesdays 3:30-7:30pm with an average 1-2 shifts a week.

Position Responsibilities:

  • Facilitate Early Childhood and Family Nature Education Programming and assist in maintaining children’s garden and spaces – includes leading lessons, read alouds and participating in unstructured play.
  • Work closely with Nature Education Coordinator to prepare materials for programming and special events.
  • Work with department staff in the preparation, facilitation and clean-up of special event-based activities as needed.

MSI Graduate Student Weekend is a yearly event hosted by the Penn Center for Minority Serving Institutions (CMSI) and Penn Graduate School of Education (Penn GSE). This weekend is all-expenses paid and provides undergraduate students from Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs) with an opportunity to get more information on pursuing graduate and professional degrees in education. During this time, students participate in professional development and educational sessions all meant to inspire, inform, and prepare students for the graduate school process. The next MSI Graduate Student Weekend is April 7–9, 2017. If you are a Junior or Senior at an eligible Minority Serving Institution (see list here) and you're interested in pursuing a graduate degree in education, we welcome you to submit an application to attend this weekend. Job Description:

  • Maintain and manipulate electronic databases used for reporting and faculty programming, format correspondence from draft to final form, assist with special projects and events including all aspects of event planning. Other duties as assigned.
  • Should be able to work approximately 15-20 hours per week, Monday through Friday.

  • Reliable with excellent communication, organization and interpersonal skills.
  • Previous support staff work experience preferred.

Graduate Student Grant Opportunities

The American Education Research Association (AERA) Division C is excited to announce the decision to use $10,000.00 in one-time money to support two Division C graduate students with a small grant for up to $5,000.00. The goal is to give two awards for $5,000.00 for research that addresses issues of inequalities in educational opportunities, from an educational psychology/learning sciences perspective. Grants will be awarded by 12/31/16 (with funds available for 2017).

Applications are due 12/5/16. Email them to Barbara Greene (Barbara@ou.edu). Applications will be reviewed by a panel that includes three faculty and one student member of Division C.

Applications should include the following:

A two-page summary of the student’s research program. The summary should include description of:

    • how the research links to the 2017 AERA theme of research addressing inequalities in educational opportunities.
    • how the research fits within the scope of Division C (for example, that it is from an educational psychology/learning sciences perspective).
    • how the funds will be spent to advance the student’s research program (approximately ½ page). Funds must be directly related to execution of the research project.
  • A letter from the student’s advisor asserting that this is the student’s independent program of research.
  • The student’s curriculum vita, which should indicate that the student is a Division C member.
