Children’s oral health

Contact Sam Hostettler: (312) 355-2522/ samhos@uic.edu

Tooth decay is the number one chronic childhood illness in America. One in five U.S. children go without dental care, and more than 40 percent of children have dental cavities by the time they reach kindergarten. Left untreated, severe tooth decay can lead to malnourishment, anemia, emergency surgery, life-threatening secondary infections and death. February is National Children’s Dental Health Month, and Dr. Marcio da Fonseca, associate professor and head of pediatric dentistry, can discuss children’s oral health issues.

Findings from a new report produced by the UIC Great Cities Institute suggest that youth joblessness in Chicago continues to be disproportionately felt by young people of color, especially black males, and there is a chronic and concentrated connection between unemployment and the city's violence. Report co-authors Teresa Cordova, director of the institute, and Matt Wilson, an economic development planner at the institute, can comment.

Recent events present an opportunity for journalists to rethink their civic responsibilities, and for citizens to think through information they receive critically, says Zizi Papacharissi, UIC professor and head of communication. Papacharissi, who studies the social and political consequences of new media technologies, says the issues and tensions are not new, but a unique vision for the future of journalism can be advanced - one that will "inform the public, reach out to diverse constituencies, and ultimately resolve these tensions."
