The May 8 Illinois Supreme Court decision about pension reform legislation sent a clear message, says David Merriman, UIC professor of public administration and economics. "Bringing fiscal stability to Illinois will require sacrifice," he said. "Political leaders should quickly adopt a clear, credible long-term plan that recognizes the legal and economic realities."

Universities continue to stage business-plan competitions as a way to foster entrepreneurial activity needed to expand the startup sector. Following UIC's 10th Annual Concept2Venture Challenge Competition, Nancy Harvey, executive director of the UIC Institute for Entrepreneurial Studies, can comment on the importance of these pitch competitions to the region.
