Black college students risk "John Henryism" if they rely too much on "grit" as advised, says UIC educational policy professor David Stovall, referring to the black folk hero who worked himself to death. Stovall, whose recent research warns of an impending mental health crisis, urges "a thorough understanding of the psychological, emotional and mental harm these students endure."

The permanent exhibition at the Hull-House Museum opens the second floor of the Hull home to the public and recounts never-before-told stories of Hull-House residents and immigrants. Jane Addams Hull-House Museum, 800 S. Halsted St.  10 a.m. - 4 p.m., Tuesday - Friday; noon - 4 p.m., Sunday.
