Facebook's soon-to-be-unveiled "Reactions" -- a range of emotions that expands how users can react to a post --  will be met with initial skepticism but quickly accepted by the social platform's users, according to Adrienne Massanari, UIC assistant professor of communication. Massanari says the update gives Facebook the ability to further monetize and subdivide their user base for marketing purposes, while also improving the platform's understanding of affect and sentiment. Massanari, who studies the social and cultural impacts of new media, says "Reactions" could serve as a "rudimentary polling feature" for groups and brands, which will allow them to quantify their audiences' responses in some way.
