Alcohol Ads

Middle school kids ages 11 to 14 could be at a greater risk of underage drinking due to them seeing an average of two to four alcohol ads per day, a new study said. Outdoor billboards and signs (38 percent) were the most common source of ads, followed by television at 26 percent. Colleen Corte, associate professor of health systems science in the UIC College of Nursing, can comment.

Father’s Day is a special Sunday when the focus is on the bond between father and child. Researchers at UIC are studying ways to help fathers, who have a criminal justice and mental health history, to have effective relationships with their children (sons and daughters) -- whether the dad is physically present in the home or not. Henrika McCoy, UIC assistant professor of social work, can explain.

Since June 2015, Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel has faced increased opposition from members of the Chicago City Council as more aldermen vote more often against the mayor's positions, according to a new report. "It's still a rubber stamp city council, but it's a weaker, less reliable rubber stamp than Emanuel had in his first four years in office," says report co-author Dick Simpson, UIC professor of political science.
