TO OUR ELECTED DISTRICT OFFICIALS IN THE ILLINOIS SENATE AND HOUSE:
Please support all efforts by the University of Illinois to secure supplemental retirement benefits.
Supplemental retirement benefits can help to offset some of the benefits lost as a result of Public Act 98-599. Although this legislation was intended to reduce the cost to the state, the burden is borne by the faculty, staff, and retirees of the University of Illinois who have paid for our pensions out of every single paycheck since our first day of work in good faith.
The burden is also borne by faculty and managers who struggle to remain competitive in attracting and retaining the best and brightest faculty and staff. The resulting damage is a diminished ability for the University as a whole to fulfill our mission of teaching, research, public service, and health care excellence.
The status of the State budget is not our fault. We have done nothing wrong, we have provided countless years of dedicated service, and most of us do not have Social Security to fall back on. A supplemental benefit program can help mitigate some of the damage for employees who will not receive the benefit they were promised; can help ensure that faculty and staff will have adequate reasonable retirement savings; and can help ensure that we can recruit and retain the high-quality faculty and staff essential to continuing our pursuit of excellence.
We, the undersigned, urge you to support any and all efforts by the University of Illinois to secure supplemental retirement benefits, and support our efforts to repair some of the consequences of Public Act 98-599.
